The Japanese Folk Tales



I'll show you three Japanese folk tales.

Japanese folk tale is a story born in life of old people.

Some of folk tales teach us the lessons of the life.




**Momotaro**

Once upon a time, there was a elder couple that don’t have a child.
One day, the grandmother was washing clothes in the river.
Then, The peach was floating in the river and coming up to her.
She took the peach home and cut the peach in half.
And a lovely boy was born from the peach.
The boy was named "Momotaro".
They brought up Momotaro.

Momotaro grew up.
He knew that ogre was torturing people and decided to get rid of the ogre.
He received "Kibidango" from his parents and headed the island in which the ogre lives.
On his way the island, he met the dog, the monkey and the pheasant.
They obeyed Momotaro.

They arrived the island and won the fight with the ogre.
They took the treasure home.
They lived happily.



**Urashima Taro**

There was the man whose name is Urashima Taro.
Urashima is a fisherman.
One day, Urashima saw the turtle bullied by the children in the beach.
Urashima helped the turtle.

The turtle said. "I want to repay for you. I would like to invite you to the Ryugu Castle―This castle is in the sea.―."
There was Otohime―a princess of the Ryugu Castle― in the Ryugu Castle.
Urashima had a good time with Otohime and marine friends.

In several days, Urashima said to Otohime. "I want to go home."
Otohime gave the Tamate Box to Urashima and said. "Don’t open this box. "

Urashima reached the beach.
But nobody knows him.
Urashima was very confused.
So Urashima open the Tamate Box.
Suddenly smoke has risen from the inside this box.
And Urashima became a old man.

Urashima spent in the Ryugu Castle several days.
But on the ground , 700 years have passed since Urashima go to the Ryugu Castle.

Nobody knows what Urashima did in the world of after 700 years.



**Kasajizo**

Once upon a time, grandfather and grandmother lived in some place.
They were very poor.
Grand father decided to go to city to sell some hats.
Because they wanted to eat mochi in New Year’s day.

Grandfather was having five hats which they made and leave for the city.
Grandfather walked in snow.

Grandfather sold five hats.
But nobody bought it.
Grandfather was obliged to go home.

On his way home, grandfather found six stone statue of Jizo.
Grandfather gave five hats to them.
All of six stone statue of Jizo couldn’t wear the hat because grandfather had only five hats.
So Grandfather gave his towel which he was wearing to one stone statue of Jizo.

Grandfather reached his house and tell grandmother to today’s occurrence.
When they went to sleep, they heard a big sound.
They saw six stone statue of Jizo carry a lot of things.
There were a lot of things in front of their house.

They could spend New Year’s day happily.
